Dakin family history

My Aunt and I are researching her Dakin ancestors who were prevailant in the Fairfield area of Buxton.The story goes that one of them who lived in a very large house was fond of a flutter. He subsequently gambled the house and lost it. He then moved his family to the Wigan area. My aunt can't quite remember the name of the house or it's whereabouts. We aren't even sure of the first name of the man who lost it but it would have been around the late 19th century as her mum was born in Wigan at the turn of the 20th century. (it was, we believe her grandfather who gambled tohe house away)Also any information on the Dakin family in general and if anyone knows details of the issue of the coat of arms we'd be extatic!

I have recently come to live in the area and would love to know more about my family roots. My Father came from Bollington and was called John Dakin. However other family members I know did come from the Peaks.

I too am called john dakin my father came from durham but had 11 brothers and sisters some who died young and my uncle also called john was killed in north africa during ww2

My dad's and Grandfather's names were John Eugene Dakin, Sr. and John Eugene Dakin, Jr. My great-great grandfather was James Harrison Dakin and Arthitect. Originated from New York, built many buildings in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Louisiana I understand also buildings in New York. I just thought that this was interesting with the same name.

I have been researching my grandma Dakins family from Castleton and have noted other Dakin references in the neighbouring area.
The missing grandfather may be William Arthur Dakin (1841-1913) who had moved his family to the Wigan area by the 1901 census. On the 1881 census he was in Fairfield, farmer of 70 acres. He had inherited the farm from his father, John Dakin who is listed in the Landowners Return as a farmer of just over 75 acres in Fairfield. William Arthur married Hannah White on 20th May 1863 at Fairfield and they had 11 children of whom 9 survived infancy. I have the names of the children and dates of baptism but as your message was posted some time ago I will leave it there for now. Let me know if you need more information

Hi There

I was a Dakin my Dakins also loved a flutter my father was a compulsive gambler even though he was Manager of a Bookies!!
They original came from Micleover and other areas of Debyshire including Bakewell and areas surrounding my family tree is on Genes reunioted if you want to see if any coneection thank you for settiung up this site.

My Dakin family lived in Hazlenden, Lancashire.. and worked in the cotton mills.
There was a story that a Dakin carriage driver eloped with the daughter of wealthy family from Derbyshire.. and may have settled in Fylde - Blackpool area.
Also, I once met a Michael Dakin from Manchester area.. who hurriedly told me that the Dakins 'Daykins' came to England with William the Conqueror 1066 and all that - there was something about being Carpenter/joiners. And chopping the ropes to set off for England from France - I have no idea where all this info. was gathered .. Perhaps this man can be found on the web. I am no expert at this genealogy stuff.

Thanks for your reply to our post, We were not aware that 9 children were born to William Arthur and Hannah White but would love to share more information with you. you can contact us at Phylpopmac@aol.com with any info you have. We are thinking there were only six surviving children, four girls and two boys. One of the boys Edward William being my grandfather. The other boy Arthur seemed to disappear and we have not been able to trace him. The four girls all became teachers in Standish, Lancashire. Does this ring any bells for you?

Hi everyone.
Not only did my Dakins love a flutter all came from big families they were Train Drivers Tram Drivers Rrailwaymen Stokers etc and good with their hands my father seved as a Carpenter and could make anything with his hands not his head that had to come from Mum.
they riginted in Leicetershire origianaloly then Dewrbyshire cme up to yorkshire an dLancashire with the railways.
All tended to live close to each other and all stayed put for many years in same pkace like me 40 years in same place.Found many in Canal boat building in the Derbyshire Area too.
Since doing Geneology have found many relatives i I never knew about met a few and definately related you can see that ,so I wish you all as much success as I have tracing your branches .

Hi guys my name is nathan dakin i live in australia, however my father (nigel dakin) moved to australia in 1960 with his parents , sylvia and trevor dakin, they were from manchester, my father has also told me of the carpenters coming over to england with william the conqueor, the story i was told that 2 of the ships had some how come together and became entangled with eac other and started sinking and a dakin who was a carpenter hacked at the ropes and set the ships apart hense the family crest being a hand choping at some rope,,, any help on finding out more would be greatly appreciated,,,, it seems that we are all related somewhere along the line though... i to love to gamble haha
