Thomas Phillips was my father, born 1894, at 21 West Street, Buxton. The address is now West Road. I am tracing my family tree.

My father was a master gentleman's hairdresser and he had/owned shops in Manchester in the early part of his career. The last one was in Buxton, at 4 Concert Place, which is no longer there having been taken over by the pub which was the premises next door to the shop.

I was born in 1944 in Buxton and at the age of 4 we all moved to live up in Harpur Hill, near to Buxton, where I lived and went to the local school at the end of Ferneydale Avenue. I loved Buxton, but I left at age 19 to live with my sister in Wales, and missed my home town a lot.

I would like to contact anyone via this forum who can remember my dad's shop and who can give me any stories about him, good or bad, I want to know everything, please. I am adding a story about each family member, you see, and I hardly knew my dad at all. He was aged 50 when I was born!

Have I come to the right place on here? Would the local press be another place to visit - do they have a website offering genealogy help? Something might have been in the paper...??? Also, would the local Library have records of any kind, and if so then a contact would be useful.

I look forward to hearing from anyone who can help with any of these queries.

Hello again folks,

Just here to say that as I have not heard from anyone I will take it that my dad is not remembered by anyone. It's not so surprising really, as I am going back a long way - late 1930's to 1948 when we moved to Harpur Hill. It was a long shot, but at least I tried it. Thank you to all those who have read this.

Best wishes, Bethgem xx

Hello again Bethgem,

Sometime it takes time to receive anwers to genealogy queries, as people tend to visit this page only when they themselves are looking for information about their own family ;-).

I did however read your post right away, but couldn't offer any comments. I am originaly from Southampton, and can't say that I'm too familiar with Buxton's past where families are concerned...

Hello again,
Thanks for the reply. I know it works now, the notifications, that is.
Well, as for my dad, he might have been well known, but then I don't really know anything about him, so he might have not been well known, you never know about these things. All I have been told is that he was a jolly good gentleman's hairdresser! He also made umbrellas from kits, and he used to mend shoes as well, all under the same shop roof.

I went to Silverlands Secondary Modern School. I know it is not there any more. I used to work at Otter Controls, in Buxton, as did my sister before me. That is all my claim to fame in Buxton, but I liked it there and have not forgotten the place.

Hello,

I am back just to say that I am going to Buxton this coming weekend, to see the annual Buxton Carnival of course, but also to do some research at the Library. I will be seeing my sister too, who lives in Manchester now, and we shall visit her on Sunday. Our stay in Buxton is for 4 nights in a Guest House. Wish me luck! Bye for now,
