Buxton born and bred

Hello everyone,

This is a new thread to call up all those of you who are born and bred in Buxton and who want to trace records and family members and anything related to genealogical research. It would be ace if a volunteer could be found who would look up records for us, in say, the library, or the Council Records maybe? This is just a starting shot at an idea. Let's hope we can get it off the ground.

From my own experience, I knew of an Italian family living in Buxton, near to the Ashwood Viaduct, at the end of Spring Gardens. I do not remember their name though, but the mother and daughter both worked at the then new corset factory at Heath Grove, Buxton.

I cannot remember the name of the factory. I worked there myself for a short time in the early 1960's, before they had to lay off the workers, due to a shortage of orders, we were told, and I left.

I do remember the mother and the daughter who were Italian. They were in charge of giving us our work. They were very pleasant too. I did see them as a family in the street one time, as I was waiting for a bus. The husband was a stocky and large man. They had a baby in a pushchair and another daughter of junior age.

I know this might be a bit odd to be mentioning all this but it might be of some help to the original poster. Hope you can translate for them.

Yes, that was the name, Richard Cooper! Thanks. I have just got back from a visit to Buxton, doing research on my family tree. I went to the local Library there and they advised me to go to Matlock as they have more records there, at the Records Office and at the County Hall.

At the Records Office the new security procedure was unnerving, to say the least. You have to sign in, fill in a long list of questions, and then put your handbag into a locker, including your bag holding your research papers. I felt I was being watched like a criminal. I didn't like being parted from my handbag, and all my papers I was holding were nearly falling to the floor. I was quite upset and said I should not have gone there.

They had not explained why they were doing this until later, and it was because of recent thefts they have suffered. The leaflets placed in the corridor were missed by the both of us, as new visitors. If we had seen them or had been handed the information first, before being greeted with so many questions and formfilling, then I would have understood what they were doing and why.

Making sure I had my spectacles with me, I was asked what I wanted to research. I realised then that I had not prepared a query on a specific record. I could only think to ask for an electoral register. There was a waiting time before the book could be shown and I waited twenty minutes. I had thought I would have a table to sit to where I could look up references from a book from the shelf, as in the Library, and check things from my papers. But no, that is not the way things are at Record Offices. Now I know. I was given a table and a book, eventually, and I found a house number I had not previously found, so the whole experience was for that.

The lady at the County Hall was very helpful. No silly joining procedures required. She saw an old photo I had with me and took a scan of it to circulate to find out for me where the place is in it. That was very helpful. I saw trades directories and discovered dates when my father had his shops. That too was helpful.

I still have another address to verify, though. I went to the place but could not see the actual number on a door. There is an alleyway leading up to buildings at the back, but there was a gate so it was private property. If I was on my own I would have knocked on a door to ask about it. I will contact the Google to see if it is an actual address. Or even go to the Post Office website. The search goes on, slowly, like a tortoise.

I think the Di Nardi's lived on Dale Road. They came to buy our house in Nunsfield Road (in 1969) but pulled out during the buying process. Don't know where they eventually moved to.
